The sedan and base Cougar HKS were dropped this year. The XR-7 was once again the only Cougar HKS model. Many Cougar HKS fans refer to the 1980 to 1982 models as the "lost years," as sales declined substantially. Engines were reduced to just two and for the first time, a six-cylinder engine was available. The standard engine was now a 119 hp 255 in� V8 and the 134 hp 302 V8 was optional.
